Marie Sharon (Erwin) Detty was born on August 25, 1898 in Manchester, Texas. She died in June of 1984 in Galveston, Texas. She was head of the Comanche County Welfare Department for nearly 20 years and she was instrumental in Lawton obtaining full-time child welfare workers.
The Youth and Family Services Center in Lawton was built in 1970 and named in her honor. This building is still a part of the Marie Detty Youth and Family Services agency. It is now the home of the Parker Pointe Group Home for teen girls. She helped organize the Comanche County Citizen's Committee on Children and Youth.
She served on the Mayor's Commission to Study Juvenile Delinquency. She was active in the American Public Welfare Association, the Oklahoma Health and Welfare Association, the Comanche County Mental Health Association, and the Lawton Women's Forum. She was a delegate to the first White House Conference on Aging and served on the Governor's and Mayor's Committee on Aging.
She served as president of the National Council of Local Administrators, the Oklahoma County Director's Association, and Lawton Business and Professional Women. In 1963, she was listed in the third edition of "Who's Who of American Women."
Our agency has changed and grown through the years, but her legacy of empowering youth and families continues to live on in the work we do in our communities. Our focus of compassion, community, and connection is inspired by Marie Detty.
